The luxury retail is a complicated but fascinating industry. Design and details constantly change even during construction and projects have impossible schedules to meet. A General Contractor needs to be a dominant player in the luxury retail space in order to keep up with these crazy expectations.

Today we talk about Dickinson Cameron Construction and we sit down with the Project Manager, Brian Naliboff to learn more about the Company.

Industry: General Contracting

Tell us about your company. What kind of product or service do you provide?

Dickinson Cameron Construction is a nationwide General Contractor that specializes in high-end retail and restaurant projects. We provide cost analysis and preconstruction services, as well as traditional general contracting services. We are able to accommodate everything from small fit-outs with quick turn around, to complete ground up renovations.

How many employees does your company currently have? Do you have offices in different States?

We currently have an office in San Diego and New York and employ about 75 people.

What inspired the business and where is your company today?

Dickinson Cameron Construction opened their doors in the early 90’s as a joint venture with two partners. For the better part of 10 years they remained a small operation concentrating mainly on outlet shops and servicing the growing market in Hawaii. In 2009 when the partners split, Frank Naliboff transformed the company into a dominant player in the luxury retail construction space.

Dickinson Cameron is inspired by the hard-work and dedication of its original employees, many of whom are still with DCC. Today, we are a medium size company with a formidable presence on the West Coast and a growing operation on the East Coast.

In which geographic area did you complete the majority of your projects?

Our strongest markets are historically Hawaii and Southern California, in places like: Ala Moana Shopping Center, South Coast Plaza, and Beverly Hills. However, we are a licensed GC in over 25 states and have been completing major projects across the country for over 20 years. More recently, we have been completing a large portion of our work in San Francisco, South Florida, Austin & Houston Texas, Boston and New York.

Is your company specialized in completing projects in a specific industry, e.g. Food & Beverage?

Most of our projects this year have been for restaurateurs as the experiential services market has grown more popular. But we specialize in building ultra-high-end spaces for mainly retail clients.

Tell us about one specific project you worked on and which challenges you solved?

In 2013-14’ Dickinson Cameron built the Burberry Flagship on Rodeo Drive. This project took exactly 1 year to construct and involved the full demolition of an existing building and its foundation, to construct the new basement and 4 story building. The new store had ceiling heights that left little room in the plenum space for the building systems. To anticipate the MEP conflicts and maximize efficiency in the schedule, DCC utilized a Building Image Modeling programmer.

During the 4 months of foundation work, we worked in parallel with our subcontractors to anticipate all the potential conflicts associated with the overhead and vertical systems. This required CAD plans for each system to be submitted to the BIM programmer and modeled in a 3D software, then during each weekly meeting we would uncover the conflicts and develop the solutions. This process finished prior to the start of a single piece of pipe or ductwork getting onsite, and as each floor was poured our Superintendent would walk it with the subcontractor foreman to spray down the exact path of each system. This solution allowed the schedule to accelerate through some of the delays caused by the foundation work, and ultimately allowed this project to be completed on-schedule.

Which milestones are you planning to achieve in the next 12 months?

In the next 12 months we plan on completing a major milestone of releasing our custom built Project Management software. This will be an in-house solution to managing RFI & Submittal workflows, scheduling meetings and providing a more complete view of the site for all stakeholders.

What do you like most about 4URSPACE?

4URSPACE is a great resource for all different types of industry professionals to gain visibility around new relationships. The construction industry in general is rather slow to adopt digital technology, and has seen very little consolidation in companies. The advantage of 4URSPACE is that we are now able to leverage a digital platform to understand who the major players are in each space. This allows businesses to grow, adapt and better understand the industry itself.
