Tell us about your company. What kind of product or service do you provide?
Permit Place is a nationwide permit expediting, land use consulting and alcohol licensing firm. We are pre-construction consultants that specialize in nationwide and local permit expediting and land use consulting for commercial properties.
How many employees does your company currently have? Do you have offices in different States?
We have 18 employees with offices in 3 states San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington DC.
What inspired the business and where is your company today?
I was working at the City of Seattle and kept getting questions about the Permit Process for the City of Seattle. I put together an online directory like a Yahoo for permitting so people could find permit information on their own. I called it Permit Place. Eventually, people asked me to help them through the process and our consulting services were born. Currently, we work throughout the United States and Canada and people get live updates on the status of their permit from our Permit Portal every day. We are radically transparent in all we do.
In which geographic area did you complete the majority of your projects?
The majority of our projects (5474) were completed in California. You can see our project breakdown by State here.
Is your company specialized in completing projects in a specific industry, e.g. Food & Beverage?
We specialize in retail (clothing, banking, retail with food) and the Hospitality industry including restaurants, alcohol, and hotels.
Tell us about one specific project you worked on and which challenges you solved?
Permit Place has worked as an expediter for Target since 2009. Since that time Permit Place has managed hundreds of projects for Target Corp. One program Permit Place managed was the addition of a refrigerated retail section to many stores.
The contractor was proposing a four-store, four Phase retail segmentation project nationwide and contracted with Permit Place to complete the work. Permit Place performed due diligence on permitting time frames, technical requirements, fees, and departmental approvals.
Permit Place, working proactively, researched all locations, assisted in creating the Critical Path schedule and submitted and had approved 16 locations, 3 departments (Fire, Electrical and Building), 4 construction project managers and 4 phases to meet Target’s deadlines.
Permit Place saved a total of 84 days over the 16 project roll out. We managed to avoid the construction schedule being delayed on account of long jurisdictional review time. In one case, Permit Place secured permits in one day beating the schedule by 30 days.
Which milestones are you planning to achieve in the next 12 months?
We are looking to open another location in Washington DC to help with expediting permits through the difficult DCRA.
